Vegetables and root crops in the area of Meri-Lappi have grown on clean
ground, and their unique flavor has been received from the sun of Northern
light. For example carrot, Lapland turnip, onion, garlic, broccoli,
kohlrabi, cauliflower, tomato, various lettuces, aromatic herbs, the
Lapland Potato and other varieties of potato are produced in the area of
Meri-Lappi.
The
local potato variety of the North,
the
Lapland
potato,
has been grown in Lapland for centuries. The Lapland potato is a very late
variety, and in terms of its growth period it is demanding and sensitive.
It is the product of an exotic substratum and well-proportioned in the
manner of the Lapland's nature in general.
The
Lapland Potato has received protected designation of origin (PDO).
Protected designation of origin
and
its symbol indicates that
the
production, refining and processing of the product is taken place in
the region of Lapland.
